MN Bully Lovers is proud to present Canine Good Citizen testing at All-American Dog Fest. We would like to give special thanks to the North American Dog Sports And Registry for providing this service. CGC testing is open to all dogs regardless of breed, age or mix.
What is it? CGC testing is a series of simulated everyday situations (10 to be exact) everywhere from a stranger approaching and petting your dog to their reactions to distractions. All tests are performed on-leash.
Why do it? CGC is the first of many certifications you can get through the American Kennel Club (AKC). It ensures that your furry companion can be a well-mannered and respected member of the community. Even if your dog is still in the early stages of training and not ready for certification, it is still a great way to see how well you and your dog are doing and what still needs to be worked on.
What do I need? You will be required to bring a brush or comb to groom your dog with. This is not to make your doggy pretty, but to see how they react to being groomed. You will also need a 4'-6' leash (leather or cloth/fabric) and a well-fitted buckle or slip collar. Retractable or "flexi" leashes are not allowed. Prong/pinch/choke collars, special training collars and head collars are also not allowed for testing.
How much? Testing will be $15 for the first dog ($10 for each additional dog in your family)
Did you know? Some homeowners insurance companies that prohibit certain breeds will allow them if they are CGC certified!
CGC Testing consists of the following:
Test 1: Accepting a friendly stranger Test 2: Sitting politely for petting Test 3: Appearance and grooming Test 4: Out for a walk (walking on loose lead) Test 5: Walking through a crowd Test 6: Sit/down command - Staying in place Test 7: Coming when called Test 8: Reaction to another dog Test 9: Reaction to distraction Test 10: Supervised separation
Helpful tips: We could probably go on and on giving you tips for CGC testing. However, here are some important things you need to know.
- Make sure your dog goes to the bathroom before testing begins. "Elimination" is not allowed during the test. The only exception is during the very last test when the event is held outside.
- You are allowed to use praise and encouragement during the test to get your dog to listen. Toys, food and treats however are not allowed.
- Go to the AKC CGC testing page to get an in-depth detail of each test your dog will go through.
- Practice! Nothing strengthens the dog-man bond more than training - and don't forget to have fun!
